• Disinfectant Spray (if old enough to be using it)

I am a big fan of providing them with their own tools and equipment. It just costs a couple of dollars, but if they have bright and colorful cleaning cloths, tool caddies and fun items like the gloved hand duster (who doesn’t LOVE that?!?) they might just find cleaning to be a bit more enjoyable. Heck, I do!

Motivate Kids to Clean?

This is a hard one! No child is really going to be excited about cleaning (most of us aren’t either, right?), but there are a few things that you can do to help.

Clean With Them The First Few Times

Why not make it a cleaning party? If the kids aren’t going to do it alone, hop in the first time and make it a family affair. You can keep them motivated during the process and give them a few tips along the way as well.

We used to spend a couple of hours every Saturday morning cleaning. The whole family had jobs to do, and we all did it together. It definitely makes things easier as there is no question of expectations. It also eliminates the “can’t I do it later?” questions. Nope. Everyone is doing it now.

This is also an important time to show them what you expect. If you don’t do this, they will not understand what is expected of them. Set them up for success.

Offer An Incentive Or Reward

This might not be what you’re hoping for but sometimes it just has to happen. Money (or other prizes) talks and you might be shocked at how willing your children are to help cleaning when there is some sort of reward on the line.

I know there is a lot of debate about this. The argument is that kids should do chores because it is expected of them, so why should you have to pay them? I get it. You can easily tie it to an allowance, if you want. At the end of the day, I think that kids will work harder if they can see a benefit at the end. I hope that translates to their school work and future jobs. Work harder to achieve your goals!

Take Away A Privilege If They’re Refusing

The flip side would be to take away something if they aren’t willing to help. This could be screen time, playtime, movie night, etc., to show them that you mean business. A few times (or maybe just once) of this happening and it’s probably not going to be an issue any longer.

I prefer to work on the positive above but sometimes it does need to come to this. Hopefully this is the choice of last resort. It is too easy to lead to a lot of negativity.

Pump Them Up With Positivity

Believe it or not, your kids may really want to help but lack the confidence to clean. Reassure them that they’ll do a great job and don’t criticize them while they’re cleaning. If there is anything that you need to fix or touch up, you can easily do that yourself later or offer it as positive feedback for them to improve. Just be careful not to turn it into a nitpicking conversation.
