One of the most iconic co*cktail recipes out there, the Hurricane co*cktail is so popular when summer rolls around that there’s even a glass named (and made) specifically for it!

The Hurricane co*cktail is a drink that was concocted in the 1940’s at a bar in New Orleans by a gentleman named Pat O’Brien. He created the drink because he had a large amount of low quality rum that he had purchased from suppliers and wanted to get rid of it. He created the drink, slapped it into what is now known as a Hurricane glass and served it to passing sailors. The popularity of the drink exploded and it’s now one of the most popular summer drinks out there!
What is a Hurricane Glass?
A hurricane glass is a glass that is formed in a lamp shape. If you can’t find ones at your local store, you can often find them on eBay. The glass you see in our pictures here is a hurricane glass and is the traditional glass that this co*cktail is served in.
Skip the Purée and use Passion Fruit Juice
One of the most confusing ingredients for people to find when wanting to make this co*cktail is the oft called for Passion Fruit Purée. I’ll be honest, we almost went crazy trying to find this stuff until we finally stumbled upon easy to find Passion Fruit juice at our local grocery store. I’ve posted a picture of the juice below to help you track it down. It works perfectly for this drink and is much easier to locate and this recipe uses it as a main ingredient.
How do you make a Hurricane co*cktail?
This co*cktail is made from two types of rum; white rum and dark rum as well as three types of juice: orange, passion fruit (see above) and lime juice. You’ll combine these ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake until cold. Get out your hurricane glass and fill it with ice (I use crushed myself) and pour the contents of the shaker over the ice. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry and serve!
Some other great co*cktails to try: Rum Runner, Apple Cider co*cktail, Boulevardier.
Happy co*cktailing!

ReplyThis drink is a little heavy on the rum for just 1 drink. A couple of these and you would be ready for bed…lol
