In the region: SVU men's volleyball falls in NCAA tournament (2024)

LEXINGTON — Lucas Osiecki and Luke Boyer each had 12 kills to lead seventh-ranked New York University to a 15-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 15-13 win over top-ranked Southern Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Saturday at Washington and Lee.

Christian Sheaffer had 15 kills for SVU (29-1).

NYU (20-7) earned a berth in the NCAA semifinals in Iowa.

MEN’S TENNIS

UVa 4, Duke 1

Chris Rodesch, Inaki Montes, Alexander Kiefer and Mans Dahlberg won in singles to give the second-ranked and top-seeded Cavaliers (22-4) an ACC semifinal win over the 12th-ranked and fourth-seeded Blue Devils (18-9) in Cary, N.C.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Natasha Subhash and Hibah Shaikh won in both singles and doubles to lead the fourth-ranked and second-seeded Cavaliers (22-3) to an ACC semifinal win over the 23rd-ranked and third-seeded Seminoles (16-8) in Cary, N.C..

WOMEN’S GOLF

UVa advances

Virginia finished third in the stroke-play portion of the ACC tournament in Wilmington, N.C., to earn a berth in Sunday’s match-play semifinals.

UVa finished with an 8-under 856.

Virginia Tech finished eighth at 9-over 873.

Amanda Sambach of UVa tied for second among individuals with a 7-under 209. Virginia Tech’s Valentine Delon tied for seventh with a 4-under 212.

MEN’S GOLF

Radford advances

Radford tied for third place in the stroke-play portion of the Big South tournament on Fripp Island, S.C., to earn a berth in Sunday’s match-play semifinals.

Radford finished with a 5-under 847.

Bryce Corbett of Radford finished fifth among individuals at 6-under 207.

SOFTBALL

UVa sweeps doubleheader

The visiting Cavaliers (30-15, 13-8 ACC) swept a doubleheader from third-ranked Duke (39-6, 17-4), winning the first game 4-3 and the second game 3-2.

Jade Hylton belted a grand slam in Game 1 and hit a two-run homer in Game 2.

Radford splits doubleheader

The visiting Highlanders (20-21, 5-9 Big South) swept a doubleheader with Longwood, winning the first game 5-3 but losing the second game 6-0.

Chloe Greene pitched a seven-hitter in Game 1.

Roanoke sweeps doubleheader

The visiting Maroons (21-9, 13-3 ODAC) swept a doubleheader from Bridgewater, winning the first game 1-0 and the second game 3-0.

Maggie McCray pitched a two-hitter in Game 1, while Lindsay Gedro threw a seven-hitter in Game 2.

Ferrum splits doubleheader

The host Panthers (8-28, 6-14 ODAC) split a doubleheader with Randolph, winning the first game 5-4 in eight innings but losing the second game 11-3.

Breanna Weaver hit an RBI single in the eighth to give Ferrum the Game 1 win.

BASEBALL

No. 10 UVa 8, Ga. Tech 7, 11 inn.

Bobby Whalen hit an RBI single in the 11th inning to give the host Cavaliers (30-10, 12-8 ACC) a win over the Yellow Jackets (23-14, 8-9).

VMI 10, The Citadel 2

Trey Morgan pitched a seven-hitter and drove in three runs to lead the host Keydets (22-20, 5-6 SoCon) to a win.

Justin Starke scored a run for VMI, giving him a school-record 185 in his career.

W&L sweeps doubleheader

The host Generals (15-14, 9-10 ODAC) swept a doubleheader from Ferrum (13-21, 5-13), winning 10-7 in each game.

Zach Senders had two hits and three RBIs in Game 1. John Turner had three hits and one RBI in Game 2.

Roanoke sweeps doubleheader

The Maroons (20-16, 13-6) swept a doubleheader from Virginia Wesleyan in Pulaski, winning the first game 9-7 and the second game 5-4.

Nate Prince and Dylan Bonzon each had two hits and two RBIs in Game 1.

MEN’S LACROSSE

No. 20 Roanoke 20, Randolph-Macon 7

Luke Kammerman had three assists, giving him an ODAC-record 172 in his career, as the host Maroons (14-3) won a nonconference game.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Radford 16, Presbyterian 6

Mady Cheney and Margaret Gleason each scored six goals to lead the visiting Highlanders (6-9, 3-3 Big South) to a win.

No. 7 W&L 23, Lynchburg 2

Hanna Bishop scored her 200th career goal as the host Generals (12-3, 8-0 ODAC) clinched the top seed in the ODAC tournament.

No. 15 Roanoke 24, Va. Wesleyan 4

Libby Bowman and Grace Koutouzis each scored four goals to lead the host Maroons (14-3, 8-1 ODAC) to a win.
