Q&A: David Fincher talks us through the off-screen torture of making 'Seven' (2024)

AP

  • Joshua Rothkopf - Los Angeles Times (TNS)

By any reasonable measure, David Fincher had made it by 1990. He was directing rapturous music videos for Madonna ("Express Yourself," "Vogue") and doing lucrative ads for top brands worldwide. The production company he co-founded, Propaganda Films, had cornered the MTV market, helping launch the careers of such future notables as Spike Jonze and Antoine Fuqua.

But there was Hollywood to conquer and Fincher, not yet 30, rushed headlong into his feature debut, one that no superfan of Ridley Scott (also a genius director of commercials) could pass up: the third movie of the "Alien" franchise. While it has since found a hardcore base of defenders, 1992's dour, much-mussed "Alien 3," a troubled production, was a disappointment that Fincher has largely disowned.

UEFA picks two video review referees at center of controversy for Euro 2024 duty

  • AP

The match official accused of bias by English Premier League club Nottingham Forest got UEFA support by being selected for the European Championship as a video review expert. Forest’s inflammatory social media post on Sunday targeting Stuart Attwell has been widely criticized across English soccer and was even mocked by another club. Attwell is among 20 video assistant referee (VAR) specialists chosen by UEFA to work at the 51-game Euro 2024 in Germany that starts June 14. They include Tomasz Kwiatkowski of Poland who UEFA removed from a Champions League game in November because of his work at a previous game.

Swedish customs seize around 1.4 tons of cocaine in one of the country's largest-ever drug busts

  • AP

A Swedish customs official has told local media the group made one of the country’s biggest-ever cocaine seizures after confiscating around 1.4 tons of the drug last week in a port near Stockholm. The drug was discovered in a container in the Nynashamn port, south of Stockholm, on April 18, Stefan Granath of Swedish customs told broadcaster SVT. Six men have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in its transport. Granath said the drug likely was meant for the European market and that Sweden was only a transit country. The volume of cocaine seized by Swedish customs peaked in 2022, when 1,812 pounds were confiscated, according to official figures.

The Latest | 'Catch-and-kill' strategy to be a focus as testimony resumes in Trump hush money case

  • AP

The National Enquirer's former publisher is expected to return to the stand in Donald Trump's historic hush money trial as testimony continues in the first-ever criminal trial against a former U.S. president. David Pecker was the first and only witness Monday following opening statements. Prosecutors say Pecker worked with Trump and Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, on a “catch-and-kill” strategy to buy up and then spike negative stories during the 2016 campaign. Testimony resumes Tuesday. It's the first of Trump's four indictments to go to trial and the first criminal trial against a former U.S. president. He has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts.

South Korean sentenced to 14 months in jail for killing 76 cats

  • By HYUNG-JIN KIM - Associated Press

A South Korean man has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for killing 76 cats in one of the country's the most gruesome cases of animal cruelty in recent years. The Changwon District Court in southeastern South Korea said that the man, who is in his 20s, was convicted of violating South Korea’s animal protection law last week. It says the man went on a cat-killing spree due to a deep hatred of the animal that he began harboring after other cats scratched his car. The court says the man had caught stray cats and adopted others from online sites to kill them between December 2022 and September 2023.

Wall Street is looking to Tesla's earnings for clues to Musk's plan to restore company's wild growth

  • By TOM KRISHER - AP Auto Writer

Faced with falling global sales and a tumbling stock price, Tesla has slashed prices again on some of its electric vehicles and its “Full Self Driving” system. It's an apparent effort to boost the company's earnings growth. But Wall Street was unimpressed and will be looking for other answers from CEO Elon Musk when Tesla releases first-quarter earnings Tuesday. For Musk, the answer appears to be the long-elusive robotaxi, which he has been touting as a growth catalyst for Tesla. Now, Musk appears to be betting that the unveiling of a new robotaxi on Aug. 8 will be the catalyst that his company needs to return to huge annual sales growth.

Police clear out a migrant camp in central Paris. Activists say it's a pre-Olympics sweep

  • By JADE LE DELEY and NICOLAS GARRIGA - Associated Press

French police have evicted migrants from a makeshift camp in Paris a few steps away from the Seine River. It's the latest operation in what aid groups call a campaign of “social cleansing” ahead of the Summer Olympics. Around 30 teenage boys and young men from West Africa were awakened by police officers and urged to pack their tents and belongings. The operation came days after police carried out a large-scale eviction at France’s biggest squatter camp. Such evictions happen every spring. But aid groups say these efforts are intensifying ahead of the Olympics. Paris police say the operation was carried out for security reasons.

Human rights groups condemn UK plan to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda after Parliament backs new law

  • By DANICA KIRKA - Associated Press

Britain’s plans to send some asylum-seekers to Rwanda were swiftly condemned by international humanitarian organizations after Parliament approved legislation allowing the deportation flights to begin later this year. Both the United Nations’ refugee agency and the Council of Europe on Tuesday called for the U.K. to rethink its plans because of concerns that the legislation undermines human rights protections and fears that it will damage international cooperation on tackling the global migrant crisis. Britain’s House of Lords dropped its attempts to amend the legislation, paving the way for it to become law. On Monday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said deportation flights to Rwanda would begin in 10-12 weeks.

A Russian strike on Kharkiv's TV tower is part of an intimidation campaign, Ukraine's Zelenskyy says

  • By ILLIA NOVIKOV - Associated Press

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says a Russian missile strike that smashed a television tower in Kharkiv was part of the Kremlin’s ongoing effort to intimidate Ukraine’s second-largest city. Kharkiv has come under increasingly frequent attack. Zelenskyy said the strike sought to “make the terror visible to the whole city and to try to limit Kharkiv’s connection and access to information.” The northeastern Kharkiv region straddles the about 600-mile front line where Ukrainian and Russian forces have been locked in battle for more than two years since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The front line has changed little amid a war of attrition, focused mostly on artillery, drones and trenches.
