The state’s top basketball prospect in the 2024 class, Cam Scott of Lexington, has been given his release by Texas from his national letter of intent, Jamie Shaw of On3 reported.

The 6-6 Scott committed publicly to the Longhorns in August, naming South Carolina as a close second in the competition. He also had Oregon, Alabama, Auburn and Ole Miss in his final group.

Scott averaged 22 points per game last season, and scored more than 2,400 points in his career. He’s the two-time Gatorade player of the year in South Carolina.

In other basketball recruiting news:

• Furman transfer guard JP Pegues committed to Auburn over USC.

• USC is in the top six with Mount St. Mary's transfer 6-5 Dakota Leffew, according to Joe Tipton of On3. He also has Villanova, Syracuse, Pitt, Georgia and Xavier on his list. He's a native of Hampton, Ga., and averaged 17 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game this season.

• Clemson is hosting an official visit from 6-11 Cincinnati transfer Viktor Lakhin, according to Paul Strelow of TigerIllustrated.

• 6-0 Summah Evans of Mercer is the first transfer portal signee for new women's basketball coach Shawn Poppie at Clemson. She was first team all-conference this season after averaging more than 13 points and seven rebounds per game.

On the football trail

• USC and Clemson made the top 12 with tackle Michael Carroll of Doylestown, Pa. The others on his list are Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Wisconsin, Georgia, Penn State, Rutgers, Texas, Michigan and UCLA. He visited South Carolina in January and Clemson in late March.

• USC is in the top seven with OT Jaylen Gilchrist (6-5, 315) of Virginia Beach, Va. The others on his short list are Virginia Tech, Mayland, Penn State, Alabama, Georgia and Virginia.

OT Malachi Goodman (6-5, 295) of Paramus, N.J., visited USC over the weekend, as did 2027 OT Israel Harris of James Island.

• OT Justin Hasenhuetl, who was offered by Clemson last May, committed to Georgia Tech. He's a native of Germany and attends school in Rabun Gap, Ga. ... Clemson target WR Dillon Alfred of Saraland, Ala., committed to Ole Miss ... Clemson target LB Jaedon Harmon of Rome, Ga., committed to Alabama.

USC offered LB Jaiden Baker (6-4, 210) of Snellville, Ga., and 2026 DE Camron Brooks (6-3, 235) of Thomasville, Ga. ... Westside QB Cutter Woods committed to Wake Forest ... Irmo QB AJ Brand was offered by Oregon State ... Heathwood Hall CB Onis Konanbanny was scheduled for an official visit to Utah this past weekend.

• Former USC RB Rashad Amos is transferring to Mississippi State from Miami of Ohio. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season.
