Entertainment to the Delight of All Present An audience of culture and as regards the fair sex of great beauty assembled in the Knickerbocker hall on Market Square to witness the long looked for entertainment of this estimable literary organization It is useless to say that the fullest expectations of those present were realized to the utmost Promptly at eight the president Prof Thomas called the house to order and made an appropriate and very original welcome speech which was greeted with cheers Then the first performer on the program was introduced Tucker who read an extremely thoughtful essay upon the erv great question of Social Next came an oration by Thomas nfon Edgar Allen Poe Mr Thomas has the happy faculty of treating every subject in a strikingly original manner He has wonderful ease of delivery and grace of expression Mr McCallie gave a declamation with good effect Young followed with ah oration on Bard of the which was well written The principal feature of this production is that it rt splayed great thought For one of his are his knowledge of literature is wonderful Then the debate followed upon the question Was Grant a greater general than The affirmative was discussed by Carter in an able and an interesting manner A Broyles answered him on the negative and it is but justice to say that he did his side of the question justice Mr Broyles is a forcible speaker and presents an array of facts and illustrations in a manner which is hard to ansWer The program closed with a dialogue by Baker and George DeArmond This was the most striking feature of the exercises and in truth the The rendition of this bean tiful poem was fall of the fire of dramatic talent The costumes were Buperb the one of a Highland chief the other of a Highland seer Altogether the exercises were excellent The committee gave their decision in favor of the negative 19 breaker the ground insurance Miner Will Return to Work Special to The Journal Wilkesbarrk Pa November 19 The Va November 19 The Methodist Conference to-day passed the following resolutions by a rising vote: Whereas The Methodist Episcopal Church South has always borne strong testimony against the theater and Whereas The patronizing of theatrical exhibitions by professed Christians has by reent occurrences been given unusual prominence and Whereas The situation seems to justify the expression of an opinion on this subject by the cenference therefore Resolved That we are profoundly convinced of the evil character and influence of the theater and of the power as a promoter of irreligion immorality cud vice Resolved That we most affectionately and earnestly exhort our people to Bet their faces against this thing as a diversion which cannot be used in the name the Lord Jesus A Brown A Peterson Paul Whitehead John Edwards that Hines had three years before that time seduced a young girl of respectable parentage named Wilhite who became a mother The printer by mistake set up the name Wilhite and it was bo published in the paper The editors and proprietors of the Journal nor the reporter knew that there was such a person living as Mary Jane Wilhite and of course had no malice toward her and meant to do her no wrong A few days afterwards her father came to town and consulted a well known lawy er about bringing the Buit The lawyer told him that a lawsuit was not necessary that if his daughter had been wronged in any way by the Journal its proprietors would cheerfully do whatever was necessary to correct it He came to the Journal office and was told that a cor rection would be made and returning he so told Mr Wilhite but that did not satisfy him: he immediately secured the services of Walter co*cke another lawyer and had Buit brought that afternoon before it was possible to make any correction The case has been tried twice The first time the jury did not agree and a mistrial was entered A few days ago it was tried again and a verdict rendered for one thousand dollars A motion was entered for a new trial which Judge Logan granted yesterday In the inter-estof ustice it could not have been otherwise as it was clearly proven that no reference bad been made to Mary Jane Wilhite that her neighbors who were witnesses in the case knew that the publication referred to and not to that nobody believed that Mary Jane was meant and that at the time of the seduction mentioned Mary Jane did not live in six miles of the place mentioned in the publication We deeply regret tbat Mary Jane Wilhite who is a respectable lady of unblemish ed character should if she does suppose tbat the Journal is capable of any attempt to sully her good name On the contrary we would do anything possible to uphold her good name or that of any other lady who might be assailed The animus of the prosecution is partly explained by the open declaration o' Walter co*cke who brought the suit who says he did it get even with the As a lawyer he had a right bring the suit and we do not blame him for it but when after bringing it he boasts that he did it to even with the Journal we have a legitimate right to take a hand in the business He has a grievance or thinks he has which he proposes to settle One cause of offense we understand is tha in writing up a democratic meeting some time ago we mentioned the gentleman in The burning of tl two breakers excitement and caused considerable rumors were current that they had been set on fire by strikinj were also rumors that miners There Appeals have been Visible Supply of Cotton New York November 19 The total visible supply of cotton for the real estate market The unparalleled improvement going on in Knoxville and suburbs has set property-owners to thinking and ihe firmness in prices is result It is a little difficult just now to accurately fix rates on any kind of malty pending future developments and this explains the comparatively few transfers made It has also defeated the completion of deals under negotiation Every mdh feels a hesitancy in letting his dirt 'go for he argues that prices must improve in the near fa ure and there is no neceity for immediate sale It is Only a question of time when the market will be ns active as it ever has been in our history Few persons we believe really appreciate what a disadvantage Knoxville is at in not having more extensive hotel accommodations If as many as three hundred persons were to come to the city now at the same time and apply for accommodations the hotels would be crowded to their very utmost we might put the number at one third less and still they would be crowded We have every reason to believe that five thousand strangers will visit Knoxville between this and next spring if they were assured of comfortable accommodations more than half that nnmber could be had at one time There is no longer any doubt that thousands of people in the north and east have their eyes turned towards Knoxville and millions of northern nd eastern capital will be invested in this section in the next two or three years This movement would be greatly accelerated by having the kind of hotel accommodations needed and which we should have We know of no place in the south where a good hotel is so urgently demanded as in Knoxville aid no place where a good hotel would pay better A few weeks ago a number of gentlemen procured a charter upon-which to organize a stock company for the purpose of erecting such a hotel as the city requires and must have They have no interest in this enterprise except the interest' felt in common with other citizens in the prosperity of Knox-ville They were willing to give their time to the project and invest some money They have not met with the encouragement they should have had The amount of stock necessary it seems to ns ought to have been promptly subscribed but it has not been and the work of raising -subscriptions drags in a way that is not encouraging There ought to be a sufficient number-of persons in the city who are able to subscribe large and rnvnfa the 9 Tre- lh Reception and List of Prewnti Given by Friends After the marriage of Mr Charles Kinzel to Miss Ida Clapp at Spring Place church Thursday
