Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever travel to New York for a stiff challenge against the New York Liberty, a team that improved drastically from 2022 to 2023 after adding Breanna Stewart.

In her first season, the Liberty went 32-8 and reached the WNBA Final. For her effort, Stewart was crowned the WNBA MVP. As a team, the Liberty were second in offensive efficiency and Net Rating at 10.3.

The Liberty are off to a quick start in 2024, with an 85-80 win over the Washington Mystics and a blowout of the Fever, 102-66. Stewart’s squad ranks first in offensive efficiency and Net Rating through two matchups.

It wasn’t so much Clark’s fault that the Fever were embarrassed. Indiana had the opportunity to draft Clark at No. 1 not because they were a great team in 2023. The Fever went 13-27 and last in the Eastern Conference.

Clark won’t instantly make a team with no depth and talent good. There is a lot of work to do before the Fever get out of the WNBA’s basem*nt. The the team will offer more resistance in this one, but the Liberty should pull away for an 18-point win to cover at home.

It has been a rough start for Clark’s introduction to the WNBA. With such a short offseason and much stronger competition, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Players in the WNBA are considerably bigger and faster than in college basketball. Additionally, WNBA teams have prepared for Clark. They are throwing multiple bodies at her and not allowing her to get free.

Clark was held to nine points, six rebounds, seven rebounds, and six assists against the Liberty on Tuesday. In addition to turnovers, she is struggling to stay out of foul trouble.

If Clark can’t avoid fouls, she’ll have to go on the bench, collecting no points. With a defensive rating of 89.6 for second in the league, and aggressive guards to frustrate the former Iowa star, she should have more issues in New York.

The Sparks at +19 is an inflated line. Although the Las Vegas Aces have the talent advantage, they’ll have to play flawless basketball to win by more than 20 points.

LA didn’t look spectacular in their 92-81 season opening loss to the Atlanta Dream. However, the offense showed flashes, which should be enough to keep them within 19 points. Cameron Brink should continue to improve on both sides of the floor in the paint.

The Dream are on the road at Phoenix after the Mercury held up pretty well against the Aces. Despite Brittney Griner’s absence, the Mercury were competitive in an 89-80 loss.
