“All news is local.”“Everything that happens that the national [media] cares about is happening in some community, somewhere.”“What they know about me is I was here before the big story happened, and I’ll be here after the big story happened.”Working in a small market at stations that are heavily focused on local news, I greatly appreciate this article. Our communities are why we do what we do, no matter the “size” of the story.https://lnkd.in/etjt-Vgq

I present “Know Your News,” or something like that! We’re still working on the name…I’ve been wanting to use trivia/quizzes with our broadcast teams for special coverage and the perfect opportunity is coming towards the end of this month with the Pony Swim. In the meantime, I was inspired after attending a Local Media Association session on gaming for revenue last month and have been itching to get started. Last week I worked with the CoastTV news team to create a weekly news quiz, which will air on Fridays. The quiz is done through Megaphone polls. Anchors read four questions, one from each day that week, live during a Friday evening newscast and people can play along in real time on their phones from their couches at home! This will absolutely become a sponsorship opportunity and could potentially include a small giveaway. I’m thankful for a team willing to try new things and a viewing audience that has already embraced this feature! #digitalcontent #broadcastnews #megaphone

Over the past three months, Draper Media news stations have made a conscious effort to revive past streaming efforts. We've had meetings and conversations with folks from digital, engineering, IT, news and more to get our technology back to a place of working and are looking towards what we need to do next. Each streaming experience is fuel to make changes and improve for the next opportunity. Our latest exciting achievement was a fantastic livestream from the WBOC team on Friday of the Pocomoke River Raft Race, led by digital content producer Sean Curtis, assistant news director Bill Mich and reporter Kyle Orens! We moved from only streaming newscasts on our news stations' apps, websites and Facebook pages to beginning to livestream press conferences or brief reporter lives from situations in the field, like ocean water breaching dunes and spilling onto a major local road. Now, the WBOC team has taken another great step by installing a camera and mic, allowing on-air talent to host streams, interact with viewers and switch between shots like live helicopter feeds and reporters on the ground, essentially producing and directing their own production on the fly.Aside from just being cool, this is awesome for three specific reasons:1. We're streaming more content than before and adapting and expanding to meet the direction of the industry.2. Multiple team members have been trained and can jump on to start a stream at a moment's notice. Digital is becoming part of everyone's daily grind. We're better able to go live with breaking news at any time, not just relying on regularly scheduled newscasts or having to decide if we should cut in on TV.3. Teams throughout the company are beginning to consider digital content on a regular basis. This is the biggest win. I've been part of many more conversations lately regarding how we can best share information with our viewers. "Should this be a picture post on Instagram and a push notification? Is this reporter package a good one for a YouTube Short/TikTok/Reel? I'm going to build off of this story by telling viewers to read the details in our app!" These may seem small on an individual basis but on a larger scale make a huge difference. Changing culture takes time, especially for a small digital department in a broadcast legacy company. While I'm thrilled to get into the trenches and work alongside our teams, seeing people run like this with an idea on their own is the best!Watch the race stream, full of everything from floating animal feed troughs and pink flamingos to PVC pipes, here: https://lnkd.in/eCkP8shw #streaming #digitalcontent #digitalcontentmanager #digitalnews #teamwork

Working in a small market that focuses on local news in an election year comes with a certain level of responsibility. I'm excited to share a new project I've been working on in this area: election information hubs! Each of Draper Media's news stations, WBOC and WRDE CoastTV, now have landing pages that organize and break down information relating to elections and politics across our coverage area. Though we've covered elections in the past, this project and emphasis to be digital first is new for us.The pages include articles about local and national politics, graphics for election results, candidate profiles, voter resources and more. This project has been especially rewarding to me due to my own passion for covering politics. I'm also continuing to grow in my ability to create pages that are useful, easy to navigate and visually pleasing.Though they'll remain an ongoing work in progress, I'm proud of how far they've come and am looking forward to their impact. They'll serve as great resources and provide background to our new reporters as well as essential information for our viewers.Check them out!WBOC: wboc.com/elections/WRDE: wrde.com/decision2024/#election #politics #news

One big goal Draper Media is working towards includes FAST channels for our news and sports stations. Over the past month we've made great progress when it comes to streaming in general thanks to team efforts from our digital, engineering and IT departments. We've kicked off training with our news staff on how to use VMix to stream to both Facebook and our apps/websites. One of our first successful runs was earlier this week, when we streamed a police and school district joint press conference regarding the search for a man accused of making school threats. We are excited and gearing up for more scenarios and events! #fastchannels #streaminghttps://lnkd.in/etn-DBVG

I was invited by Torie Seagravesto join her for a gathering of the Polytech High School advisory board to discuss current industry trends and how the school can best prepare its broadcast media students prior to their graduation. We had great conversations on a wide range of topics from #aiand #streaming in the digital realm to the importance of time management for a MMJ. As a graduate of a similar#cteprogram, I cannot express how important career and technical education is! It makes me happy to see teachers and schools investing in community relationships, as we all benefit from a prepared, educated and excited workforce. #digitalmedia#digitalnews#advisoryboard

On this Super Bowl weekend I’m having a#flashbackfridayto covering this fall’s high school state football championships 🏈 Our stations had a busy week, preparing for not one but two championship games in our coverage areas. I love my job, but I also love any reason to get out in the field! Providing live updates for the game on our websites, apps and social media from the sidelines was a blast! Though I’m more of a marching band type of girl, I guess football is okay, too 🤓Cape Henlopen Delaware social reelhttps://lnkd.in/eKNHpXNh Stephen Decatur Maryland social reelhttps://lnkd.in/e5VH6qyZ

Lately I've been looking for more opportunities to practice flying. This weekend I got to capture the first moments of the Polar Bear Plunge in Rehoboth Beach, which had over 4,000 people participate ❄ 🌊 This was way cooler than flying around my neighborhood! #dronevideography #dronepilot
